Demonstrators Protest Police Brutality, Remember the Dead

IMC-US, 24.10.2006

On Sunday, October 22, demonstrations were held across the country calling for an end to police brutality. Many protesters wore black in remembrance of people who have been killed by law enforcement officers, and speakers read names and gave testimony about victims.

The day marked the 11th annual day of protest organized by the October 22 Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation. Initiators of the effort in 1996 included the Four Winds student Movement, the International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal, and the Revolutionary Communist Party (read more background info). Many of the 2006 endorsers are family members of victims (see list of 2006 endorsers). On Sunday the Coalition also released an update to the book "Stolen Lives: Killed by Law Enforcement", which documents thousands of names and stories about people who have died at the hands of law enforcement during the last two decades.
