VIDEO: A Mother Demands Changes To Mental Health System

Instead of celebrating with her son for his birthday, Cindy Fisher was found rallying in front of the Clark County Courthouse in Vancouver with dozens of supporters. She made a cry out for help after her son was recently taken into custody and faced charges for what boiled down to a coat he found that had been stolen. After returning the jacket, he was apprehended and blamed for the crime. Due to his history of mental health issues and the fact that he was on a high dosage of a drug he had been prescribed at the time, he acted in fear of the cops and was arrested. Cindy gathered much support since her son was put in jail, and all her hard work has paid off. She broke the good news to all those in attedance that her son had contacted her early that morning to tell her that the charges had been dropped and now he is under care at a facility. The facility however is giving her son large doses of medication and this worries her because she knows the effects of these drugs and believes there should be a better treatment solution. She showed us how she prays in a meditative state for her sons healing every day.

We can only hope for a better future that will provide those with mental health issues more than just a suppressive drug. Cindy Fisher still needs over $5,000 to meet the $9,000 cost to put Siddharta in a new program which offers better treatment. If you would like to know more, contact Cindi below. Atlanta Organizes Against G8/NATO Summit

This May, two international summits are happening in the same city, at almost the same time.  The G8 and NATO are meeting in Chicago.  There will be many different participants in the meetings, but they all represent the same interests: profit, war, and global exploitation.  And though their opponents come from diverse backgrounds and concerns, they are united by a common vision: the summits in Chicago must be met with massive protest, the kind that even world leaders and CEOs cannot ignore. UPDATE from eds: The White House has announced that the G8 summit scheduled for Chicago in May 2012 will instead now take place at Camp David. Is this the second time Chicago activists have chased away the G8?

Ashland Food Co-op found in violation of federal labor law

Ashland, OR – March 8, 2012 - A majority of workers at Ashland Food Co-op have been united since June of 2011 to improve their working conditions by organizing a union with United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 555. Ashland Food Co-op management learned of workers’ desire to organize and reacted swiftly with heavy handed tactics to try and sway workers away from unionization. The Employer’s actions included soliciting and promising to remedy grievances, providing benefits to employees that it previously refused to provide, disciplining union activists, threatening employees with more severe discipline if they voted for a union, instituting a rule that prohibited employees from discussing the union and then enforcing this rule only against employees who supported the union, and soliciting employees to sign an anti-union petition

Community Groups "Leak" Police Review Board Documents

Community organizations Copwatch and BLOCS are taking action against a recent Atlanta Citizen Review Board (ACRB) decision to hide the board's findings from the public. The findings have been procured and published at

The ACRB exists to investigate and publicly review complaints against police. Since its creation, it has been met with resistance and sabotage by local government. APD has routinely refused to cooperate with ACRB investigations, and both Chiefs Pennington and Turner have rejected every single board decision which found fault with an officer. City council repeatedly cut into the ACRB's already bare-bones budget, making it impossible to conduct effective investigations. After being stymied at every turn, former ACRB Executive Director Cristina Beamud resigned in protest. The new director promptly removed all complaints and ACRB findings from the more

G8 Move from Chicago Marks Month Full of Activist Achievements, Victories

In a stunning move, the G8 -- which was slated to hold its 2012 summit in Chicago -- abruptly announced on March 5th that the G8 would instead convene in the exclusive presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland. The official stated reason is that the G8 sought a "more casual backdrop", though activists have claimed victory for pressuring the move. If so, then it might be the capstone of a month full of dramatic actions and wins for grassroots Chicago activists.

Indybay Journalists Charged with Felony: Conspiracy to Make Media

Viewpoint Discrimination and Selective Prosecution at Work in Charges Against Independent Journalists

Santa Cruz County District Attorney Bob Lee has embarked on a full frontal assault against independent media in Santa Cruz by including four regular contributors to the independent news website amongst the eleven people charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors after the occupation of a vacant bank building on November 30th, 2011. District Attorney Lee apparently believes it is his duty to dictate how events such as the occupation of the vacant bank at 75 River Street should be reported on by the media, and if he does not approve of the coverage, then journalists risk the DA bringing charges against them. Budgets and priorities

Can we Occupy the budget debate? The Congressional Progressive Caucus actually has a good proposal on the table, but the chattering class and the press corps are fixated on Representative Ryan's plan, which doesn't meet any criteria of reasonableness or rationality. But it does meet the criteria of "austerity," the idea that addressing the "debt crisis" takes precedence over all other possible priorities. What is to be done? Fortunately, grassroots organizers have some ideas and are gearing up to act. (Image from IEL)

"Million Hoodie March" Across the US

Numerous marches, many of them numbering in the thousands, have sprung up over the country to demand justice for Trayvon Martin. United with the name "The Million Hoodie March," marchers protested the fact that the man who shot the 17-year-old has yet to be charged with a crime under the protection of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law. The hoodies were a reference to Trayvon Martin's clothes when we was killed as well as Geraldo Rivera's comment that "the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin's death as George Zimmerman was."

On February 26th, Trayvon Martin was shot dead by self-styled vigilante George Zimmerman in Sandford, Florida. Sanford police did not arrest Zimmerman for killing the unarmed teenager, nor even take physical evidence such as Zimmerman's clothing or the handgun he used that night.

Alice Walker & Frances Goldin on the Life of Legendary Poet Adrienne Rich (1929-2012)

Art means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of power which holds it hostage.

The legendary poet, essayist and feminist Adrienne Rich died on March 27, 2012, at the age of 82 in her Santa Cruz, California home. Rich was one of the most celebrated poets of the last half-century and a lifelong advocate for women, gay and lesbian rights, peace and racial justice. Rich drew widespread acclaim for her many volumes of poetry and prose, which brought the oppression of women and lesbians into the public spotlight.

Adrienne Rich was a key figure in the women’s movement and an uncompromising critic of the powerful. Rich won numerous awards and honors, including the National Book Award for the 1973 collection Diving into the Wreck. Refusing to accept the award alone, she appeared onstage with poets Audre Lorde and Alice Walker, and the three accepted the award on behalf of all women. Protest Shuts Down Hotel Sofitel Entrance Before Romney Gala Fundraiser

Demonstrators shut down the entrance of the Hotel Sofitel in Redwood City where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney held a fundraising dinner on Monday. Several protest groups coordinated to produce a show of anger aimed at the presidential hopeful and wealthy attendees of the event. One group erected a giant Etch A Sketch outside the hotel entrance, making light of a recent Romney aide's gaffe; others mocked billionaire supporters of his campaign by wearing faux fur and pearls and lifting glasses of champagne.
