After the last two incidents at the Douglas Road Metrorail Station, I was pretty much expecting the worst Sunday as I prepared for the photo protest. I even had this crazy notion that I would don a wig as I entered the station to prevent the security guards from recognizing me, which would no doubt lead to them assaulting me and stealing my cameras. After three years of organizing and a two-year rent strike, residents at Marbury Plaza have won a major victory. The owner of the 672 unit building located in southeast D.C., the Lightstone Group, has agreed to provide $5 million for repairs to the property. The Washington Post reported that the funds will be used "to repair or replace roofs and heating, air-conditioning, hot water and building-access systems. New windows will be installed throughout the complex, which includes two towers and several garden-style apartment buildings… A walk-through of the complex in 2008 by building inspectors and the tenants' association found about 825 housing code violations, the association said, including the presence of mold and widespread electrical outages."

Ten Years Later: Still No to the WTO!

In late November and early December, a series of events will be held across the US commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the historic protests against the WTO in Seattle in 1999, and opposing the upcoming round of WTO meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. These talks are scheduled to take place November 30th through December 2nd — ten years to the day after the Seattle gathering. At these talks, government officials and corporate lobbyists will be promoting the expansion of business-as-usual trade policies as a solution to, rather than a cause of, the global economic and environmental crises. The commemoration also coincides with an international day of action on Nov 30 in advance of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change taking place in Copenhagen Dec. 7–28.
