Ten Years Later: Still No to the WTO!

In late November and early December, a series of events will be held across the US commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the historic protests against the WTO in Seattle in 1999, and opposing the upcoming round of WTO meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. These talks are scheduled to take place November 30th through December 2nd — ten years to the day after the Seattle gathering. At these talks, government officials and corporate lobbyists will be promoting the expansion of business-as-usual trade policies as a solution to, rather than a cause of, the global economic and environmental crises. The commemoration also coincides with an international day of action on Nov 30 in advance of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change taking place in Copenhagen Dec. 7–28. SDAC Announces Anticapitalathon (TM) Games

From April 23rd through 25th, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) will hold their annual spring meetings in Washington, DC. The IMF/WB are responsible for saddling struggling economies with unmanageable debt, driving billions into deeper poverty through the imposition of (badly misnamed) “poverty reduction” programs, and threatening countries who refuse to follow their austerity programs with economic blacklisting and isolation.

Animal Teeth Swallow Up Bank Cards at Bank of America and Wells Fargo

Four of the nation's biggest banks — Bank of America, Citibank, Chase and Wells Fargo — are ruining the American economy, say activists who are taking to the streets this month to urge bank customers to "break up that affair with your big bank." In the San Francisco Bay Area members of the Raging Grannies launched a culture jamming action at banks in three cities to give the message some "real teeth". Protesters Declare "A Diamond is Forever, but Apartheid Has to End" on Valentine's Day

Fifty human rights activists performed for Valentine's Day shoppers compelling them to boycott the Israeli diamond and settlement mogul Lev Leviev outside his store on Madison Avenue. The New York protest took place against the backdrop of an escalating arrest and harassment campaign by the Israeli military against Palestinian human rights organizations and protest and boycott activists from the West Bank villages where Leviev has built settlements.

The protest also included a dance performed to a parody of Beyonce's "Single Ladies," which told "All the customers":
Its Apartheid so you shouldn't put a ring on it
Occupation is a crime so put an end to it

Chevron Marathon Marred by Denial of Runners' Free Speech

A team that is running for human rights in Ecuador at this Sunday's Chevron Houston Marathon was just kicked out of the marathon's Expo by Chevron Marathon Managing Director Steven Karpas. The runners had paid for a table to distribute "I'm Running for Human Rights" stickers and information about Chevron's refusal to clean up over 18 billion tons of toxic oil sludge they are responsible for in the Ecuadorean rainforest.

Managing Director Steven Karpas told the Rainforest Action Network team, "higher ups at Chevron are freaking out" and threatened to arrest the peaceful runners. Police then ejected the runners from the city-owned and operated building... Read More | More Info: Chevron Toxico

Albertsons Illegal Coupon Food Stamp Tax

Ashland, Oregon Albertsons charges an Oregon mom tax for using coupons and paying with food stamps.

The extra charges happened randomly and never added up to much, but fifty cents here and a dollar there eventually started nagging at her conscience. Why was an Oregon mom charged a "tax" at Albertsons when she used coupons and paid with food stamps? She tested several theories and finally concluded that this "tax" was charged only at the Ashland, Oregon store when she used manufacturer coupons and Catalina coupons.

Fire your bank!! Put $$ in credit unions

Too-big-to-fail banks are profiting from bailout dollars and government guarantees, and growing bigger.

WE can make the difference. It is time to “fire your bank” and put money in your local credit union. I’ve used the Rogue Federal Credit Union (RFCU) since they started in a house on Peach Street in Medford, Oregon back in the early 70’s… They rock!  https://roguefcu.org

Last year after getting upset with these banks that were “too big to fail” and had received OUR taxpayer money to bail ‘em out I did some exploration about the RFCU to find out about its investments. I went up to a teller at the Ashland branch of the RFCU and said, “I want to talk to the most important person here” and before the day was over I was on the phone with the credit union’s CEO Gene Pelham. Not long after I was able to interview Mr. Pelham on my radio show at KSKQ here in Ashland, Oregon.

On the Brain Labor Report for March 30, 2009 we interview Gene Pelham, President and CEO of the Rogue Federal Credit Union, a credit union which focuses on Southern Oregon > > > Listen or Download Here:  http://ia331427.us.archive.org/1/items/BrainLaborReportMarch30/blr20090330.mp3

Leslie Parks Illegally Locked Out of Her Home by IndyMac/One West Bank

On Tuesday night, Dec. 8, in a freezing blizzard, Leslie Parks returned from her job to find that IndyMac/One West had changed the locks to her home (3749 Park Ave. in Minneapolis).

Locking Leslie Parks out of her home is illegal. In fact it is beyond illegal, given the struggle that Leslie Parks is waging to keep her home. It is a cynical breach of what all assumed were good faith negotiations on the part of IndyMac/One West.

After the start of national call-in week to IndyMac officials, IndyMac informed Leslie, in writing, on Nov. 25 that they were rescinding both the foreclosure and the sheriffs sale. According to Ms. Parks, “I got an email from IndyMac stating, and I quote, ‘In an effort to work with you and your mother and come to a resolution, we have started the process of rescinding the Trusteed Sale which took place on May 29, 2009.’

Buy Nothing Day?

Buy Nothing Day (Friday, November 27th) is upon us again. Once again people are going to be out in large numbers, way too early in the morning the day after Thanksgiving just to get a deal. Is it really worth it?

The concept of “Buy Nothing Day” is lost on us so instead I propose the people make it “Buy Local Day”. Ideally we would fold that dollar back up and put it back in our wallets, but most of us know that will not happen. I say if we are going to spend money should it not be on something that will creating a lasting effect for our local economy and money that will stay within our communities.

On "Black Friday", Bay Area Native Americans Call on People to Boycott Emeryville's Mall

On Friday, November 27, a protest at the Emeryville's Bay Street Mall will call on people to boycott the mall and to respect the sacred Ohlone site. The Bay Street Mall was built on top of an ancient Ohlone burial site after years of protest actions by the local Native American community. The construction of the mall unearthed thousands of human remains, many of which were taken away to landfill in the name of consumerism.
