May Day 2006: The Gran Boicott is on |
According to the NO HR4437 Network: "On May 1, we are calling No Work, No School, No Sales, and No Buying, and also to have rallies around symbols of economic trade in your areas (stock exchanges, anti-immigrant corporations, etc.) to protest the anti-immigrant movements across the country."
May 1st has been celebrated for more than a century as International Workers Day, commerating the struggle for the eight hour workday in the US and the state murder of anarchist labor organizers in Chicago in 1887. The militant labor movement in Chicago was largely due to the influence of radical immigrant workers from central Europe, who were the most exploited of the working class. May First is celebrated worldwide with the exception of a handfull of countries including the United States.

May Day March for Dignity and Rights for all floods Southwest Houston |
The strong turn out this year is certainly influenced by the repressive and racist SB1070 legislation that was passed in Arizona, and reawakened immigrant rights activism across the country that has not been seen since the mass mobilizations in 2006 against HR4437. We are excited about the end of our semester and looking forward to pushing for immigrant rights over the summer and in the upcoming semester. [full article with photos]

Mayday!!! 8,000 March in Tucson, 10,000 in Phoenix |
On Saturday, May 1 more than 8,000 people marched in Tucson against SB1070 and a suite of racist, anti-immigrant and anti-worker laws in the state of Arizona (photos: 1, 2). In Phoenix, as many as 10,000 marched to the (recently privatized) State Capitol.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, May 4th the Flagstaff City Council voted unanimously to take legal action against the state over SB1070. Pima Couny Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has stated he will not enforce the law, and both the cities of Tucson and Phoenix are considering their own lawsuits.

May Day 2010 in Buffalo! |
One hundred and twenty four years after the three day anarchist-led, general strike in Chicago saw the martyring of many of its leaders, May 1st is still a day of struggle for justice worldwide. This year that day will be celebrated in Buffalo with a couple important events that all people should try to attend.
March for Immigrant and Worker Rights
Many different community, immigrant, Latino, student, labor, and anti-capitalist groups are coming together this May Day to march in defense of immigrant and worker rights. With the recent passage of Arizona's sb1070, it is an incredibly important time for us to stand united and not allow immigrants in this country to be those blamed for the many problems our country now faces. It's clear that big business and financial institutions have created a massive economic catastrophe and now they expect everyone but themselves to take the blame. The burden of the past few years of economic recession is shifted onto working people and immigrants. And, it's time we put a stop to that.
Come join the march and get involved with one of the many groups that will be in attendance. The rally meets at 2pm at the intersection of Main St. and Goodell and will be marching to MLK Park.
The Furies of Mother Jones
After the rally, at 8pm, our local left wing artists at Subversive Theatre will be performing their one-day only rendition of The Furies of Mother Jones. For those that have not been to a subversive theatre performance in the past, it is an absolute must. The boost that arts, in particular theatre, can give to our movements is phenomenal. More of us should be supporting Subversive Theatre and regularly attending their performances. The Furies of Mother Jones will be held at 255 Great Arrow Drive in the Manny Fried Playhouse. All are welcome, but seating is limited so get there early!

Murdered Illinois Panther leader Mark Clark still gets no respect from hometown paper |
The Peoria Journal Star owes a long overdue public apology to the late Mark Clark, and especially to his remaining family members.
Peorian Mark Clark, then 22, was murdered by Chicago police authorities during the infamous predawn raid on December 4, 1969 at a West Side apartment where he and a group of fellow Black Panthers were sleeping. The renowned and charismatic Panther Fred Hampton, age 21, also was killed by police, shot point blank in the head while still on his mattress.
The incident became a landmark event in the urban civil rights movement with both Clark and Hampton considered martyrs to the causes of worldwide black liberation and the revolutionary human rights struggle. According to published newspaper reports, 14 police officers assigned to the office of then Cook County State’s Attorney Edward V. Hanrahan (who died just last week, on June 9, at age 88) stormed the apartment at 2337 W. Monroe St. occupied by seven Black Panthers in a 4:40 a.m. raid.
